Week 4 MBA 6601 - From Product to Market
As a founder, be prepared to feel alone on the journey to the top. While there may be many people that are with you and on your side through it all, they will have a difficult time understanding how you really feel throughout the process. Countless others will not even understand what you are doing or why you are doing it. Adapt is the word you need to remember in moving from the development of the product to actually marketing the developed product. The process is unpredictable and it is important to be able come up with solutions along the way. Curve balls that you have never seen before and never knew existed will begin to show up and you need to be able to "roll with the punches" so to speak.
You will need a lot of support and the right people with you along the way. You can never truly know that you have the right people until situations arise where you need to solve a problem and devise a solution. In those moments you will see where the shortfalls are and how you need to adapt with enlisting someone else's help to reach a solution. Start raising additional funding and find someone who knows a lot more about it than you so to guide you through the process.
A large part of marketing your product is correctly identifying what product category you are actually in. If your product has a large impact within the category you are marketing it in, your sales potential multiplies exponentially. Keep the next point in your journey always within focus so you can anticipate along the way and you will always be ready for the next step. You will not have to go back and replan or redesign to be able to hit the mark because you were always anticipating the next move and you are ready for it.
One of the harder parts of moving from product to market is knowing who you need to keep on your team and who can be left in the pass. Some people may only be needed for a specific task or a short time. Knowing when to let people go or when to move on is essential in being successful. On the flip side you also need to know when you need help because it is impossible to do everything alone. Identify when you need help and that you do need to bring an additional person on board. At minimum your team should have a thought leader, challenger, collaborator, and operator.
